Getting Started with Heavy Gear Blitz

This is the first in a series of short articles about the best way to get into the Heavy Gear Blitz game and what options you have to do so.

This short introduction answers some of the first big questions you might have before deciding to try out Heavy Gear Blitz.

What is Heavy Gear Blitz?

Heavy Gear Blitz is a fast-paced miniature skirmish game of armoured battle-suit combat. The defenders of Terra Nova battle the invading Colonial Expeditionary Forces of Earth. Their main weapon is the Heavy Gear, an armoured battle-suit standing three times a person’s height. They fight for freedom and control of their destiny, with their Gears supported by tanks, infantry and more.

Why choose Heavy Gear Blitz?

So you like the sound of that, but this probably isn’t your first armoured battle-suit wargame. What makes Heavy Gear Blitz special? Some of the ‘pros’ of Heavy Gear Blitz include:

  • The full rules are free in PDF so you can read them thoroughly if you wish before deciding.
  • You can start small. A typical force for a small game can easily be 4-6 models.
  • The system is a lot of fun and has been improved and tweaked over more than 25 years.
  • You can personalise your force with loads of options, especially for your veterans and duelist.
  • You’re always involved in the game, dodging and even shooting back during opponents turns.
  • As well as Heavy Gears, the game can involve other unit types, each with strengths & weaknesses.

Where do I start?

To begin, you need a copy of the rules, a starter force of models and some six-sided dice. You’ll need an opponent with a starter force too. There are two 2 Player Starter Boxes that give you everything two people need to get started except the dice (but you probably already have those, don’t you?). Alternatively, there are a series of Army Boxes so you can each pick your preferred faction.

While the Starter and Army Boxes are the most economical way to get started with their plastic miniatures, there is also a wide range of metal and resin models. You can form your army from any of these.
